The Multibarred Angelfish (Paracentropyge multifasciata) is a dwarf angelfish found in the Indo-Pacific from the Cocos-Keeling Islands to the Society Islands, north to the Yaeyama Islands and south to the Great Barrier Reef. It reaches 12cm total length. The white body carries eight black bars, with the spaces between them turning yellowish toward the belly; the mouth and fins are yellow, and juveniles have a black ocellus on the rear dorsal fin that fades with age. It lives at 7-100m (usually 20-70m) on steep outer reef slopes, hiding under overhangs and in caves and crevices and rarely straying far from shelter. It is thought to feed on algae, sponges, tunicates and crustaceans. In captivity it often refuses prepared and frozen foods at first and is at real risk of starvation; provide live rock and live sponge and patiently offer small frozen foods and angelfish or herbivore preparations. Give it 265L or more with plenty of hiding places and keep only one per tank. Semi-aggressive and may nip invertebrates, so use caution in reef tanks. Because of the feeding challenge it is rated an expert-level species.
