The Bicolor Angelfish (Centropyge bicolor) is a dwarf angelfish widely distributed in the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Samoa and the Phoenix Islands, north to southern Japan and south to New Caledonia. It reaches 15cm total length. The front half of the body and the caudal fin are bright yellow, the rear half deep blue, with a blue patch running from the eye to the top of the head. It lives at 1-25m in lagoons, channels and reef slopes, feeding on algae, small crustaceans and worms. It is widely exported for the aquarium trade. In captivity provide 265L or more with plenty of hiding places and live rock. It is semi-aggressive and nips stony and soft corals and clam mantles, so it is not suited to reef tanks. A protogynous hermaphrodite whose sex change completes in 18-20 days; sexes look alike and aquarium breeding is very difficult. Feed a mix of spirulina, marine algae, angelfish preparations and frozen mysis or shrimp. Newly imported fish can be skittish, so start them in a calm tank with plenty of cover.
