The Majestic Angelfish (Pomacanthus navarchus) is a large angelfish found from Indonesia to Papua New Guinea, north to the Philippines, south to Rowley Shoals and the southern Great Barrier Reef, and in Micronesia at Palau and Yap. It reaches 28cm total length, small for the genus. Juveniles are dark blue with slightly curved white bars, and the change to adult colours is abrupt with little intermediate colouring. Adults are lemon yellow on the head in front of the eyes and the front of the body, deep blue in a funnel-shaped central section and reticulated yellow and blue on the rear, with the sections divided by black-edged pale blue bands. It lives at 3-40m on coral-rich outer slopes, channels and lagoons and feeds on sponges and tunicates. It is a highly prized aquarium export. Somewhat shy but one of the easier large angels, it needs 680L or more with plenty of hiding places and live rock. It nips stony and soft corals and clam mantles and is not suited to reef tanks. Feed a mix of vegetable matter, frozen shrimp and sponge-based angelfish preparations.
