The Blueface Angelfish (Pomacanthus xanthometopon) is a large angelfish found in the Indo-Pacific from the Maldives to Vanuatu, north to the Yaeyama Islands and in Micronesia at Palau and Kosrae. It reaches 38cm total length. Juveniles are black with six white bars separated by pale blue lines and a caudal fin barred in two shades of blue. Adult colouring develops gradually at 7-12cm: a pale yellow body with a blue-and-yellow reticulated scale pattern, bright yellow pectoral fins, a yellow mask around the eyes, a dense network of blue lines over the lower face and a black ocellus at the base of the dorsal fin. It inhabits lagoons, outer reef slopes and channels at 5-30m, favouring rocky areas with caves where juveniles shelter, and feeds on tunicates, sponges, encrusting organisms and algae. Somewhat uncommon in the trade; fish under 20cm adapt to aquaria more readily. Provide 830L or more with plenty of live rock and hiding places. It becomes territorial once it is the largest fish, so keep it as the only angel. It nips stony and soft corals and clam mantles, so use caution in reef tanks.
