Nudibranch Predation
🔎 Find by symptom
About this condition
Certain predatory nudibranchs feed on the polyps and tissue of SPS and LPS corals, causing localized tissue damage and bleaching. They are commonly introduced with new corals and are difficult to spot due to their small size and camouflaging coloration.
Common symptoms
- Localized polyp retraction or areas that fail to open
- Small nudibranchs or egg masses visible on coral surface
- Cryptically colored small organisms crawling on the host coral
- Localized thinning or bleaching of tissue
- Gradual tissue recession spreading from a specific point
Common causes
- Eggs or individuals attached to newly introduced corals
- Introduction via live rock or substrate
- Skipping quarantine or dip treatment
- Insufficient nighttime observation (many nudibranchs are nocturnal)
Prevention (husbandry & daily care)
Quarantine new corals for at least two weeks and carry out dip treatment as recommended by a specialist store. Regular nighttime observation after introduction.

Consider consulting a specialist store within a few daysWhat can a specialist store do?
Consultation with an aquarium store specializing in corals or an experienced marine keeper is recommended. Since host specificity varies by nudibranch species, photographing the organism and showing it to an expert helps with identification and selecting the appropriate response. Guidance on nighttime flashlight inspection to directly locate individuals and safe removal procedures using a quarantine tank can be obtained.
