The Keyhole Angelfish (Centropyge tibicen) is a dwarf angelfish of the family Pomacanthidae found in the western Pacific from Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean to Fiji, north to southern Japan and south to Lord Howe Island. Reaching 19cm total length it is one of the largest Centropyge; the body is black to dark blue with a keyhole-shaped white elongate blotch mid-flank, and the pelvic and front lower anal fins are yellow. In juveniles the mark appears as a white vertical bar that becomes an oval blotch with age. It lives at 4-55m on lagoon and seaward reefs with mixed coral and rubble, feeding mainly on algae. In captivity provide 265L or more with plenty of live rock for grazing. It is semi-aggressive and may nip stony and soft corals and clam mantles, so use caution in reef tanks. A protogynous hermaphrodite with no colour difference between sexes; breeding in aquaria is very difficult. It tolerates ionic copper medication poorly, so consider alternative treatments. Plain but hardy and widely traded, it is among the easier dwarf angels.
