The Azure Damselfish (Chrysiptera hemicyanea) is a small damselfish of the eastern Indian Ocean (Rowley Shoals, Scott Reef and Ashmore Reef) and Indonesia. It lives in small groups among branching Acropora corals on lagoon and near-shore reefs at 1-38 m, feeding on plankton 0.3-0.5 m above the bottom. The brilliant blue body shades to yellow on the belly, anal fin and tail, with the extent of yellow varying between individuals. Maximum length is 7 cm. Pairs spawn on the substrate and the male guards the eggs; it has been bred in captivity and captive-bred fish are traded. Hardy and tolerant of water quality swings, it is considered a beginner's fish and is easy to keep in a tank of 114 L or more with live rock for shelter. It is among the less aggressive damsels, but becomes territorial with age, so keep it with semi-aggressive fish; several can be kept together in a large reef tank. It is harmless to corals and invertebrates. The IUCN Red List assesses it as Vulnerable (VU) because of its restricted range.
