Starck's Damselfish (Chrysiptera starcki) is a small damsel with an anti-equatorial distribution, from the Ryukyu Islands to Taiwan and from Queensland to New Caledonia, and it has also been reported from Tonga. It lives among rocky outcrops and crevices in sand channels on outer reef slopes at 20-60 m, and is most common in the deeper sections. The brilliant blue body is yellow along the back, with the yellow extending onto the tail and lower jaw. It reaches 7 cm SL. Pairs spawn on the substrate and the male guards the eggs. An active, constantly moving fish, it is hardy and easy to keep and needs less room than many other damsels, so it is considered a good beginner's fish. Keep it in a tank of 114 L or more with live rock for shelter. It feeds on zooplankton and algae and ignores invertebrates, making it suitable for reef tanks. It is aggressive toward its own kind, however, so keep only one unless the tank is very large.
