The Pearlscale Angelfish (Centropyge vrolikii) is a dwarf angelfish found in the western Pacific from Christmas Island and Bali to the Marshall Islands and Vanuatu, north to southern Japan and south to Lord Howe Island. It reaches 12cm total length. The body is pale grey to brown with whitish scale centres that darken to black toward the rear; there is orange at the gill opening and pectoral base and blue margins on the caudal fin and rear dorsal and anal fins. It inhabits lagoons and seaward reefs at 0-30m where coral, rock and rubble carry rich algae and sponge growth, feeding mainly on filamentous algae but also sponges. Where ranges overlap it hybridises with C. eibli and C. flavissima. In captivity provide 265L or more with live rock for grazing. It is semi-aggressive, somewhat bolder than many in the genus, and may nip corals and clam mantles, so use caution in reef tanks. It tolerates copper medication poorly. Found in Japanese waters, hardy and quick to feed, it is among the easier dwarf angels.
