Randall's shrimp goby (Amblyeleotris randalli) is a shrimp goby of the family Gobiidae. It ranges across the western Pacific from the Moluccas to the Solomon Islands, north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to the northern Great Barrier Reef, and also occurs in Palau. It lives mainly in rubble caves on carbonate sand at 25-50 m, sharing a burrow with an alpheid shrimp. The body is white with seven narrow orange bars, one of which circles the head across the eyes; males have a large, fan-like first dorsal fin marked with a black ocellus. Maximum length is about 12 cm. Care is easy: in a tank of 38 L or more with a bed of fine sand and rubble, pairing it with a pistol shrimp (Alpheus) lets you watch the goby act as lookout at the burrow entrance. It tolerates other shrimp gobies and may even share a burrow, but conspecifics squabble in small tanks. Newly introduced fish may refuse food for a few days before settling in and taking frozen mysis and brine shrimp.
