The hi-fin red banded goby (Stonogobiops nematodes) is a small shrimp goby of the family Gobiidae. It is found in the Indo-West Pacific, including the Seychelles, the Philippines and Bali, on sand-rubble bottoms and deep coastal slopes below 10 m, usually at 15-25 m. It lives in pairs with the pistol shrimp Alpheus randalli and characteristically hovers above the burrow entrance over dark sand. The body is white with dark diagonal bands, the face is yellow and the first dorsal spine extends into a long black filament. Maximum length is about 6 cm. Care is of moderate difficulty: use a tank of 38 L or more with a deep bed of fine sand and a lid to prevent jumping. Introduced together with a pistol shrimp (Alpheus), the goby can be watched standing guard over the burrow the shrimp digs. It is peaceful and suits reef tanks and small community tanks, but avoid fast or large tank mates that outcompete it for food.
