Arc-eye Hawkfish

The arc-eye hawkfish (Paracirrhites arcatus) is a mid-sized member of the family Cirrhitidae. It is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to the Hawaiian, Line and Mangareva islands, north to southern Japan and south to Australia and Rapa. It lives on coral reefs at 0-91 m, usually 1-33 m, perching on branching Stylophora, Pocillopora and Acropora heads to ambush shrimps, small fishes, crabs and other crustaceans. A blue-and-orange arc runs around and behind the eye, and most individuals carry a white stripe along the rear half of the body. Maximum total length is about 20 cm. Hardy and easy to keep, but aggressive by nature. Provide a tank of 114 L or more with hiding places, and add it last, because it harasses new arrivals; it will also take on other hawkfish and larger fish. In a reef tank it eats small shrimp, crabs, anemones and small fish, so although harmless to corals, choose invertebrate and fish tank mates carefully. It readily takes frozen mysis, chopped seafood and frozen carnivore preparations.
