The falco hawkfish (Cirrhitichthys falco), also called the dwarf hawkfish, is a small member of the family Cirrhitidae. It ranges across the Indo-Pacific from the Maldives to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to the southern Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia. It lives on coral reefs at 4-46 m, usually 10-20 m, resting at the base of coral heads to ambush prey. The body is white with red-brown blotches arranged in diagonal rows, and the dorsal spines carry tufts of yellow cirri. Maximum total length is about 8 cm. In the wild a male holds a harem of several females and spawns at dusk with a short ascent into the water column. Hardy and easy to keep, it needs a tank of 114 L or more with plenty of hiding places. Semi-aggressive by nature, it should not be housed with larger, more aggressive hawkfish. Because it eats small fish and shrimp it can be an excellent reef inhabitant with caution, but small shrimp and crabs kept with it will be eaten. It readily takes frozen mysis, chopped seafood and frozen carnivore preparations. It is sometimes confused with the congeneric Cirrhitichthys aprinus.
