Echidna nebulosa
A small moray with snowflake-like black and yellow blotches on a white body. Its blunt teeth are made for crustaceans, so it is fairly safe with fish and very hardy. Captive fish usually stay around 60cm.
The Snowflake Moray (Echidna nebulosa) is a muraenid ranging from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and southern Japan, and in the eastern Pacific from Baja California to Colombia. It lives among rocks and corals on intertidal reef flats and shallow lagoons, usually shallower than 10m. Its white body carries black star-shaped blotches with yellow centres, hence the name. It is nocturnal and has blunt molar-like teeth rather than fangs, feeding mainly on crustaceans. Maximum 100cm, but captive fish usually stay around 60cm and have lived 15 years or more. Keep at 22-26C, pH 8.1-8.4 and SG 1.020-1.025 in 190L or more with live-rock caves. Extremely hardy and quick to accept frozen shrimp and fish, but a master escape artist, so a gap-free lid is essential. It can share a tank with fish too big to swallow and leaves corals and anemones alone, but eats shrimp and crabs. Hand feeding risks an accidental bite. IUCN: Least Concern.
