Yasha Goby

The yasha goby (Stonogobiops yasha) is a small shrimp goby of the family Gobiidae, described in 2001. It lives on sandy bottoms of outer reef slopes in the western Pacific at 15-40 m, sharing a burrow with the pistol shrimp Alpheus randalli and hovering in pairs a few centimetres above the entrance. The body is white with three reddish-orange stripes, the first dorsal spine is extremely elongated, there is a black patch under the jaw, and the dorsal, anal and caudal fins are opaque yellow. Maximum length is about 4.7 cm. It is easy to keep: provide a tank of 38 L or more with fine sand and coral rubble, and introduce it with a pistol shrimp (Alpheus) to observe the partnership. Fit a lid, as it jumps when startled. Very docile, it can be kept singly or in a small group and suits reef tanks. Feed frozen mysis, vitamin-enriched brine shrimp and chopped shrimp at least twice a day. Captive-bred fish are available alongside wild-caught ones.
