The forktail blenny (Meiacanthus atrodorsalis) is a mid-sized fang blenny of the family Blenniidae. It ranges across the western Pacific from Bali and the Philippines to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to Rowley Shoals, the southern Great Barrier Reef and New Caledonia, and occurs throughout Micronesia. Found singly or in pairs on lagoon and seaward reefs at 0-30 m, it feeds on zooplankton and small benthic invertebrates. The front of the body is pale blue grading to yellow toward the tail, a blue-edged black line slants back from the eye, and the caudal fin is deeply forked with elongated outer rays. Maximum total length is about 11 cm. It has venomous fangs in the lower jaw and bites the inside of a predator's mouth, so predators avoid it; two other blenny species mimic it to exploit this protection. Care is of moderate difficulty: provide a tank of 114 L or more with plenty of live rock. Take care when placing hands in the tank because of the fangs, and keep only one per tank unless a breeding pair. Feed chopped crustacean meat, frozen mysis and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp with herbivore preparations. Captive-bred fish are available.
