The Midas blenny (Ecsenius midas) is a mid-sized combtooth blenny of the family Blenniidae. It is widely distributed across the Indo-Pacific from the Gulf of Aqaba and the southeast coast of Africa to the Marquesas, inhabiting coral reefs at 2-40 m. Unlike most blennies it feeds on plankton while swimming 2-3 m above the bottom, and it schools with anthias such as Pseudanthias squamipinnis, matching their colour and swimming style in a form of social mimicry. The body is deep gold with a bluish shade under the chin and the eyes are rimmed in blue; maximum total length is about 13 cm. Easy to keep, it needs a tank of 114 L or more with plenty of rock to perch on. Aggressive behaviour tends to appear in cramped tanks, so a larger tank is preferable. It may harass small planktivores and is known to nip at firefish and gobies. Feed chopped crustacean meat, frozen mysis and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp along with herbivore preparations containing algae. It is scaleless, so water-quality swings affect it directly through the skin; keep conditions stable.
