About
The canary blenny (Meiacanthus oualanensis) is a fang blenny of the family Blenniidae endemic to Fiji. It lives on coral reefs and is solid bright yellow; males are larger than females and go through a series of colour changes when breeding. Maximum length is about 10 cm. Members of this genus carry venom-gland-equipped canines (fangs) in the lower jaw and are known for biting the inside of a predator's mouth so that it spits them out, a defence so effective that other fish mimic them. Care is of moderate difficulty. Provide a tank of 114 L or more with plenty of live rock; it swims in mid-water while hunting and grazing around the rock. Not aggressive, but because of its fangs it may treat a hand in the tank as an attacker and bite, so take care during maintenance. Keep only one per tank unless a breeding pair. Feed chopped crustacean meat, frozen mysis and vitamin-enriched brine shrimp with herbivore preparations. Eggs are adhesive and laid on the substrate; larvae are planktonic.
