The Raccoon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunula) is a butterflyfish found widely across the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Hawaii and the Marquesas, north to southern Japan and south to Lord Howe Island. The yellow-orange body darkens toward the back; behind the black band over the eye is a broad white bar, from which two yellow-edged black bands run back to the dorsal fin. Oblique reddish lines mark the flanks and a black spot sits on the tail base. The species name likens the white bar behind the eye to a crescent moon. FishBase records a maximum of 20cm (total length) and depths of 0-170m; it is nocturnal, forming pairs or small groups on shallow reef flats, and feeds on benthic invertebrates such as nudibranchs and tubeworm tentacles, plus algae and coral polyps. It is among the easier butterflyfish to keep and can share a fish-only tank of 470L or more with other butterflyfish. A reluctant feeder can be tempted with a small anemone; once settled, feed meaty frozen foods and pellets several times a day. It eats corals and invertebrates, so keep it out of reef tanks. It is peaceful.
