The Threadfin Butterflyfish (Chaetodon auriga) is a butterflyfish found across the Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea and East Africa to Hawaii and the Marquesas, north to Japan. Fine diagonal lines run upward on the front half of the white body and downward on the rear half to form a chevron, set off by a black eye band and yellow dorsal, anal and tail fins. A thread-like extension of the rear dorsal fin gives the English name; the Japanese name refers to the stiff spines. The black eyespot on the dorsal fin is absent in Red Sea fish. FishBase records a maximum of 25cm (total length); it lives on reefs and rubble at 0-60m, feeding on polychaetes, anemones, coral polyps and algae, and forms monogamous pairs when breeding. It is among the easier butterflyfish to keep: provide a tank of 470L or more with many hiding places. Feed mainly meaty foods such as fish flesh, crustaceans, mysis and frozen preparations. It picks at corals and anemones, so keep it out of reef tanks and in a live-rock system instead. It is peaceful and somewhat shy, so give it a calm setting after introduction.
