Cirrhilabrus lubbocki
A small fairy wrasse from the Philippines and Indonesia. Pink to red-purple body with a yellow back; reaches only about 8 cm and leaves corals alone, making it a good reef-tank choice. A tight lid is essential as it jumps.
Lubbock's fairy wrasse (Cirrhilabrus lubbocki) is a small labrid of the genus Cirrhilabrus found in the western central Pacific around the Philippines and Celebes, Indonesia. It lives in fairly large groups over coral rubble and finely branched coral heads on outer reefs, mostly at 5-30 m, feeding on zooplankton. Coloration varies widely from pink to bright red or purple, and adults often develop a bright yellow dorsal fin. With a maximum length of about 8 cm it is one of the smaller members of the genus; like all fairy wrasses it is a protogynous hermaphrodite, so groups consist of one male and several females. It is considered easy to keep and ignores corals and invertebrates, making it well suited to reef aquaria. Fairy wrasses are notorious jumpers, so a gap-free lid is essential. It readily accepts frozen mysis, brine shrimp and prepared foods. It may quarrel with other Cirrhilabrus species, so tank size and introduction order matter when mixing them.
