Cirrhilabrus scottorum
A mid-sized fairy wrasse ranging from the Great Barrier Reef to the Pitcairn group. Colour varies by locality between green, blue and red forms, all with a black margin on the dorsal fin. Easy to keep, but a jumper.
Scott's fairy wrasse (Cirrhilabrus scottorum) is a mid-sized Cirrhilabrus of the South Pacific, ranging from the Great Barrier Reef through Fiji and the Cook Islands to the Pitcairn group. It is more common on outer reefs than in sheltered lagoons, at 3-40 m, feeding on zooplankton a short distance above the bottom. Groups consist mainly of females and juveniles; courting males rise 3 m or more above the reef with fins fully erect. At up to about 13 cm it is one of the larger fairy wrasses. Coloration differs by locality: Fijian fish are mostly green with a black dorsal margin, Cook Islands fish are bluer with yellow fins, and Australian fish show more red. It is easy to keep and harmless to corals and invertebrates, so it suits reef aquaria, but it jumps readily and a gap-free lid is essential. It eats frozen mysis, brine shrimp and prepared foods.
