The tropical fish category on Bree-Choku lets you welcome a wide range of freshwater fish — guppies, bettas, corydoras, tetras and more — directly from the breeders and aquarists who raised them. With fewer steps in distribution, you can check each fish's condition and the water it was kept in before deciding. Even beginners can choose fish suited to their setup after learning the basics of tank cycling, water temperature, and tank-mate compatibility.
1Cycle the tank and establish beneficial bacteria
Before adding tropical fish, the tank must be matured so that filter bacteria can break down toxic ammonia and nitrite. Cycling generally takes several weeks. Run the filter beforehand and add fish only once water quality is stable to greatly reduce early problems.
2Maintain the right water temperature
Most tropical fish prefer around 24-26°C, and sudden temperature swings can make them ill. Prepare a heater and thermostat, and watch for overheating in summer. Preferred ranges differ by species, so confirm each fish's ideal temperature before welcoming it.
3Keep water clean with filtration and water changes
Fish waste and uneaten food foul the water and can cause disease if neglected. Install a filter sized to your tank and make regular partial water changes a habit. Match temperature and chemistry when refilling, and avoid changing too much at once.
4Acclimate fish carefully on arrival
Moving fish from the shop water to your tank stresses them due to differences in temperature and chemistry. Float the bag to match temperature, then use the drip method to slowly introduce tank water before release. When fish arrive by delivery, carry out this process right away.
5Check which fish can be kept together
Mixing peaceful and aggressive fish, or fish of very different sizes, can lead to nipped fins and chasing. Swimming levels and preferred water also vary by species. When keeping several kinds, research temperament, size, and water compatibility in advance.
6Know common diseases such as white spot
White spot disease, marked by white dots on the body, often appears after temperature swings or transport stress. Early detection, careful temperature control, and treatment when needed are key to recovery. Observing newly welcomed fish for a while before moving them to the main tank is reassuring.
7Estimate startup and ongoing costs
Beyond initial gear — tank, filter, heater, lighting, substrate — there are ongoing costs for food, water conditioners, and electricity. Larger tanks keep water more stable but cost more to equip. Estimate the equipment and monthly costs before welcoming fish.
