Copperband butterflyfish
A butterflyfish with orange stripes and elongated snout. Also valued for controlling Aiptasia anemones.
The copperband butterflyfish (Chelmon rostratus), also called the beaked coral fish, is found on coral reefs of both the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Its white body banded with four coppery-orange vertical stripes and its remarkably elongated, beak-like snout make it instantly recognizable. In nature it uses this narrow mouth to probe coral crevices and rocky interstices for small invertebrates, polychaete worms, and tube-dwelling organisms. It is frequently introduced to reef aquariums specifically for biological control of Aiptasia anemones, which it will eat — though individual willingness varies significantly and cannot be guaranteed. Notoriously difficult to establish on prepared foods, beginners are advised to start with frozen clam and frozen brine shrimp and transition gradually.
