The Pyramid Butterflyfish (Hemitaurichthys polylepis) is a butterflyfish of the Pacific from Christmas Island in the eastern Indian Ocean to Indonesia, Hawaii, the Line Islands and Pitcairn, north to southern Japan. The head, dorsal and pelvic fins are dark brown to yellow, and the white flank meets the yellow-orange back in a triangular, pyramid-like outline; the anal fin is also yellow-orange. FishBase records a maximum of 18cm (total length); it forms large schools along steep outer reef slopes at 0-60m and feeds on plankton in open water away from the reef. It spawns in pairs. It is easy to keep: provide a tank of 470L or more with plenty of live rock for shelter. Shy at first, it soon feeds well on frozen foods containing algae, dried algae and vitamin-enriched brine and mysis shrimp. As a plankton feeder it does not harm corals or invertebrates, making it one of the few butterflyfish suitable for reef tanks. It is peaceful and can be kept singly, in pairs or in small groups.
