The Red Sea Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma desjardinii) is a large surgeonfish of the Indian Ocean from the Red Sea and East Africa to the Andaman Sea. Once treated as a subspecies of the Pacific Sailfin Tang (Z. velifer), it is now recognised as a separate species. Dark bands line a grey body, with orange-to-yellow lines and spots filling the spaces between them, and the tail is blue with white spots, which distinguishes it from Z. velifer. FishBase records a maximum of 40cm (total length); it lives in lagoons and seaward reefs at 3-30m, adults in pairs and juveniles alone. It eats algae and plankton, and Red Sea fish have been recorded feeding on jellyfish. Keep it in a tank of 680L or more and feed seaweed-based foods often. It is aggressive toward its own species and genus, so keep one unless the tank is very large. It is peaceful with other fish and does not harm corals. Watch for marine ich; quarantine and keep water stable. There is no standard Japanese name; trade names such as Desjardini and Red Sea Sailfin are used.
