About

Osteogaster aenea is a small callichthyid catfish ranging east of the Andes from Colombia and Trinidad to the La Plata basin. The 2024 generic revision moved it out of Corydoras aeneus. FishBase records 7.5cm standard length and Seriously Fish gives 65-75mm. The flanks shine metallic bronze with a greenish sheen over the shoulder. Aquarium conditions are broad at 21-27C, pH 6.0-8.0 and 2-15dGH, with an 80 x 30cm base and about 72 litres as the guide. It is peaceful and gregarious, and should be kept in groups of at least four to six. Selectively bred albino and long-finned strains are well established, while artificially dyed and short-bodied specimens also circulate and are best avoided. Breeding uses two males per female, triggered by a large water change with cooler water. The IUCN Red List assesses it as Least Concern.
