About
Brochis splendens is a callichthyid bottom dweller found widely through the Amazon basin. Seriously Fish gives a standard length of 8cm and FishBase 9.9cm, making it large for a corydoras-type fish in the trade. The body is deep and thick, and the flanks shine metallic emerald to blue-green depending on the angle of light. A high dorsal-fin ray count is the morphological hallmark of Brochis; after Britto merged the genus into Corydoras in 2003, FishBase again treats Brochis splendens as the valid name. It tolerates 20-28C, pH 5.0-8.0 and 2-15dGH. Its size demands floor area, and a 120 x 45cm base of about 243 litres is the minimum. Peaceful and strongly gregarious, it is best kept in groups of six to eight or more. Like other callichthyids it rises to the surface to gulp air for intestinal respiration. IUCN status is Least Concern.
