Betta imbellis
A wild betta from southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and northern Sumatra. It reaches about 6cm and carries a red crescent along the edge of the caudal fin. A bubble-nester, and gentler than the ornamental forms.
Betta imbellis is a small anabantoid from still waters in southern Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia and northern Sumatra, with introduced populations in Singapore. It reaches 6cm SL, with a bright red crescent on the trailing edge of the caudal fin and iridescent blue scales on the gill cover. Seriously Fish gives 20-28C, pH 5.0-7.5 and 1-10 dGH; a pair can be kept in a 45 x 30cm tank of about 41 litres, always tightly covered because the fish jumps. Live and frozen Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm bring out the best colour, though dried foods are accepted once recognised. It is a bubble-nester: the male builds a surface nest and alone tends the eggs and fry, which hatch in 24-48 hours and swim free 3-4 days later. Fry need infusoria-grade food at first. Gentler than ornamental bettas, but males still fight, so it is not a community fish.

From a 45 x 30cm tank (about 41 litres) for a pair. Provide plenty of cover with plants and wood, and fit a tight lid because it jumps.
20-28C, pH 5.0-7.5, 1-10 dGH. Avoid strong flow and aim for near-still water.
Not a community fish. Keep alone or with very peaceful species. Several males can coexist given enough cover, but pairs are isolated for breeding.
Base the diet on live and frozen Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm. Dried foods are taken once recognised, but live food keeps colour up.
A bubble-nester. The male builds a surface nest and alone guards eggs and fry; eggs hatch in 24-48 hours and fry swim free 3-4 days later. Fry need infusoria.
It breathes air through a labyrinth organ, so keep surface access clear. Do not let the air above the water get cold, and guard against jumping.
