Ctenopoma acutirostre
A medium-sized anabantoid with dark blotches scattered over a tan body. It mimics a drifting leaf and ambushes small fish, moving slowly. Hardy and sometimes living over 15 years, it is a standard first oddball.
Ctenopoma acutirostre is an anabantid from the middle Congo River basin in Central Africa. FishBase records 15cm total length and Seriously Fish 10-15cm standard length. The dark blotches on a tan body mimic a dead leaf, and the fish is an ambush predator that has converged on the South American leaf fishes. Seriously Fish recommends 20-28C, pH 5.5-7.5 and 2-12dGH with a 120 x 30cm base, about 108 litres. It prefers dim lighting, surface vegetation and leaf litter, and needs an air gap above the water because it breathes air. Feed frozen bloodworm, earthworms and pieces of prawn or fish; mammalian and avian meat such as beef heart cannot be properly metabolised. Spawning in aquaria is very rarely reported. It is hardy and can live over 15 years.

A 120 x 30cm base, about 108 litres, is the practical minimum. Keep the lighting dim and provide floating plants, driftwood and leaf litter, with an air gap above the water.
Seriously Fish gives 20-28C, pH 5.5-7.5 and 2-12dGH. FishBase records 20-25C, pH 6.0-8.0 and 5-12dH in the wild.
An ambush predator that will eat any fish small enough to swallow. It is normally kept singly, and its slow movement means it loses out to boisterous, fast-feeding tankmates.
An obligate predator. Offer bloodworm, earthworms and strips of prawn or fish. Do not feed mammalian or avian meat such as beef heart, whose lipids it cannot metabolise, and feeder fish bring no benefit.
Spawning in aquaria is very rarely reported. Buy a group of young fish and let them pair off. The buoyant eggs rest among floating plants and hatch after 48 hours; the adults give no parental care and should be removed.
Growth is slow and it takes several years to reach adult size. Seriously Fish notes that males carry more spines on the gill covers, and these snag in nets. The species is hardy and long-lived.
Intermediate. This is an intermediate-level species. Some prior experience and knowledge of environmental management are recommended.
The ideal temperature for Leopard Bush Fish is 20〜28℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
The average lifespan of Leopard Bush Fish is Over 15 years. With proper care and nutrition, they can live a long and healthy life.
Leopard Bush Fish typically reaches 15cm as an adult. Size may vary depending on care conditions and individual genetics.
Leopard Bush Fish feeds on: Frozen bloodworm, earthworms, chopped prawn and fish. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
