Zhangixalus schlegelii
A Japanese endemic rhacophorid found from Honshu to Kyushu. It is green above with a yellow iris and lays a foam nest in a burrow in the banks of rice paddies. It is the sister species of Zhangixalus arboreus.
Zhangixalus schlegelii is a rhacophorid endemic to Japan, occurring in Honshu south of Mutsu in Aomori Prefecture, Shikoku, Kyushu and the Goto Islands, but absent from Tsushima. Males measure 3.2-4.3 cm and females 4.3-5.3 cm. The back is green, sometimes turning brown for camouflage, and the belly white; the yellow iris separates it from unspotted Zhangixalus arboreus. The epithet honours Hermann Schlegel, director of the Leiden natural history museum. It lives in rice paddies and forest and breeds mainly from April to May, the male calling from a burrow dug in the paddy bank, where the pair deposits a cream foam nest 3-10 cm across containing 200-300 eggs. When rain dissolves the foam the tadpoles wash down into the water. Keepers report 16-24 C as suitable; hibernation is difficult in captivity because the frogs desiccate easily.

Keepers cite 16-24 C as suitable. For humidity, keep the substrate damp while ensuring ventilation so that it does not become stuffy.
Arboreal, so use a tall, well-ventilated enclosure. Combine a moisture-retaining substrate with branches, broad-leaved plants, hides and a shallow water area.
Carnivorous, taking insects and other arthropods. Offer appropriately sized crickets after lights out, dusted with supplement.
Small and nocturnal. The call is higher and quieter than that of the Japanese tree frog, and males call from inside burrows, so they are hard to locate.
A Japanese native: check local ordinances and protected-area rules before collecting. Never release captive animals, as it causes genetic disturbance.
Intermediate. This is an intermediate-level species. Some prior experience and knowledge of environmental management are recommended.
The ideal temperature for Schlegel's Green Tree Frog is 16〜24℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
The average lifespan of Schlegel's Green Tree Frog is 5-8 years. With proper care and nutrition, they can live a long and healthy life.
Schlegel's Green Tree Frog typically reaches 3.2-5.3cm as an adult. Size may vary depending on care conditions and individual genetics.
Schlegel's Green Tree Frog feeds on: Crickets and other insects. Aim for a balanced diet with appropriate feeding frequency.
