About this condition
An infection of the airways or lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi, leading to breathing difficulty and mucus discharge. Reptiles are especially vulnerable when environmental temperatures are inadequate, and the condition can become life-threatening if it progresses.
Common symptoms
- Mucus or foamy discharge from the mouth or nostrils
- Labored breathing or wheezing sounds
- Keeping the mouth open
- Loss of appetite and lethargy
- Holding the neck tilted upward without moving
Common causes
- Low or inadequate temperatures (housing below recommended range)
- Excessive or insufficient humidity leading to weakened immunity
- Bacterial or fungal infection from an unsanitary enclosure
- Viral infection introduced through new animals or shared equipment
- Reduced resistance due to stress or poor nutrition
Prevention (husbandry & daily care)
Maintain appropriate temperature gradients (basking spot and cooler area) and humidity levels suited to the species. Regular cleaning of the enclosure, water dish, and substrate prevents unsanitary conditions. Quarantine new animals for at least 30 days and observe their health before housing them with existing animals.
