A slender arboreal hylid widespread in the southeastern United States. It is yellowish green with a white stripe from the snout along the flank, and shifts between green and reddish brown with its surroundings.
Dryophytes cinereus is an arboreal hylid widespread across the central and southeastern United States. Adults are 4-6 cm, females larger, with a slim body, projecting snout and large toe discs. Colour is usually yellowish green but ranges to reddish brown depending on surroundings, sometimes with pale yellow dorsal spots, and most individuals show a white stripe from the snout along the flank. It lives in open-canopy forest with permanent water and dense vegetation, and also in waterside woodland, grassland, farmland and towns, becoming strictly aquatic during hibernation and breeding. Males give low-frequency advertisement calls and defend territory with aggressive calls or wrestling that rarely causes injury. Keep it around 21-28 C, with a 38 litre tank suiting two or three frogs. Hardy and readily available, it is treated as a beginner's arboreal frog.

Aim for 21-28 C. A spotlight above the enclosure both warms it and improves visibility. If overwintering, hold around 7-10 C and never let it freeze.
A 38 litre aquarium suits two or three frogs, with four the maximum; fewer frogs reduces competition at feeding. Add branches and broad-leaved plants as perches.
Feed appropriately sized crickets after lights out. Housed with other species it tends to reach the food first. Dust feeders with supplement.
Generally peaceable, though males hold territory and may answer intruders with aggressive calls or wrestling, rarely with injury.
It jumps well and escapes easily when the enclosure is opened. Never release it outdoors in Japan.
