About

Phyllomedusa sauvagii is an arboreal phyllomedusine frog of the dry scrub forest of the South American Gran Chaco. It is stout-bodied at 6-8 cm, pale green overall with white streaking from the lower jaw along the flanks. The name waxy refers to the lipid secretion it wipes over its whole body with its hind legs to stop evaporation; it also excretes uric acid rather than liquid urine, another drought adaptation. Because its skin repels water it drinks with its mouth, unusual among frogs. Breeding runs through the October-March rainy season, when pairs fold a leaf overhanging water around the egg mass. It is the least tolerant of stagnant air in its genus, so ventilation comes first.
