About
Trachycephalus resinifictrix is a large arboreal hylid widespread in the Amazon basin. Adults measure 6.5-10 cm and are light grey with broad brown or black banding, the contrast being stronger in juveniles, and the skin becomes warty with age. Its blood is bluish, which shows through the mouth lining and toe pads. The Japanese name refers to the cross-shaped black mark in the golden iris, while the English name comes from the milky secretion it exudes when threatened. It breeds in water-filled tree holes. It does well in groups, and a 45 x 45 x 60 cm enclosure suits two or three adults. Frogs in the Japanese trade are almost entirely captive bred in Europe and North America.
