The Zebra Lionfish (Dendrochirus zebra) is a small scorpaenid of the genus Dendrochirus found from the Red Sea and East Africa to Samoa, north to southern Japan and the Ogasawara Islands and south to Australia. It lives on coral, rubble and rock bottoms of reef flats, usually at 3-60m, sometimes in small groups in sheltered caves. It shows red, white and black bands, rounded fan-like pectoral fins and 13 venomous dorsal spines, hides in shade by day and hunts small crustaceans and fish at night; cooperative hunting in groups of two or three has been observed. At a maximum of 25cm it is one of the smaller lionfish and moves slowly. Keep at 22-26C, pH 8.1-8.4 and SG 1.020-1.025 in 190L or more with plenty of hiding places. Newly introduced fish hide; start them on live shrimp and convert to frozen foods. It has spawned in captivity. It eats shrimp and small fish that fit in its mouth but does not harm corals. A sting feels like a bee sting and is treated with hot water. IUCN: Least Concern.
