The squareback or squarespot anthias (Pseudanthias pleurotaenia) ranges from Indonesia to Samoa, north to the Ryukyu Islands and south to New Caledonia and the Rowley Shoals in the eastern Indian Ocean. Recorded to 180 m but usually shallower than 25 m, it forms shoals a few metres above the edges of current-swept drop-offs. Males are pink to magenta with a pale square blotch on the flank; females are yellow with a lavender belly and a thin blue line from the eye to the pectoral fin. Juveniles are solitary and stay close to shelter. At up to about 20 cm it is a large anthias. It is a protogynous hermaphrodite: when the male disappears, the largest female changes sex. Care is of moderate difficulty; colours fade under strong light, so dim, indirect lighting suits it. Feed frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp and similar foods in small amounts several times a day. A single fish can be kept in a mid-sized tank, but a group needs a large tank with plenty of swimming room.
