About
Moray eels (including members of the genus Gymnothorax) are a group of elongate marine fish of the family Muraenidae in the eel order. They are characterized by hiding in rock crevices and holes with only the head protruding while opening and closing their large mouths, and they are strongly carnivorous. With sharp teeth and a second pair of pharyngeal jaws deep in the throat, they grip prey firmly and swallow it. Poor of sight but keen of smell, they become active at night to hunt fish and crustaceans. Keeping them requires a large aquarium and a sturdy, collapse-proof refuge; being powerful and expert escape artists, a weighted, sealable lid is indispensable. Because they eat anything that fits in the mouth, tankmates must be chosen carefully, making them suitable for intermediate or more experienced keepers.
