The Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) is a small marine cardinalfish restricted to the Banggai Islands of Indonesia. Silvery-white with three black bars and delicate filamentous fin edges, it stays compact at 6-8 cm. It swims slowly and likes to hover among long-spined urchins or around anemones. Its most striking trait is mouthbrooding: the male carries eggs and fry in his mouth, so the whole cycle from spawning to release can be watched in the aquarium, which makes it one of the easiest marine fish to breed at home.
