The blue-spotted jawfish (Opistognathus rosenblatti) is a small jawfish endemic to the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) off Mexico. Its orange-to-reddish body sprinkled with brilliant blue spots makes it one of the most striking jawfishes, and it is famous for digging its own burrow in the sand and peering out with just its head to survey its surroundings. Males are mouthbrooders, incubating eggs in the buccal cavity. In aquaria a deep sand bed reinforced with crushed shell and rubble is needed so the burrow does not collapse, and because the fish dives for cover when startled, peaceful tankmates suit its shy temperament. It prefers slightly cooler water than many tropical reef fish.
