Distinctive red crosshatch pattern and elongated snout. Endearing perching behavior on corals and rocks. Carnivorous and feisty.
The longnose hawkfish (Oxycirrhites typus) is a small fish of the family Cirrhitidae native to deeper coral reef zones (10–100 m depth) throughout the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its white body crisscrossed with vivid red grid lines and a distinctively elongated snout make it immediately recognizable. Like all hawkfishes, it displays a characteristic 'perching' behavior, resting motionless on coral heads or rock formations while scanning for prey. Inquisitive and personable, it often recognizes its keeper and can become quite bold. A carnivore, it will prey on small fish and crustaceans, so care must be taken with tankmate selection. A 100-litre or larger aquarium furnished with suitable perching structures provides the ideal environment.
