The hawkfish anthias (Serranocirrhitus latus) is the sole member of its genus. It ranges through the western Pacific from the Moluccas to Fiji, north to the Izu Islands and Taiwan, and south to New Caledonia and the Great Barrier Reef (FishBase), reaching 13 cm TL. It is deep-bodied and pinkish orange, with males larger than females. It lives near caves, ledges and drop-offs on inshore reefs at 15-70 m, alone or in small groups, and characteristically swims upside-down along rock ceilings, feeding on zooplankton. Keep it with peaceful fish in a tank with plenty of caves and overhangs. Some fish are slow to feed; Saltcorner advises releasing food into the current so it drifts to the fish, and starting reluctant feeders on live brine shrimp. It leaves corals and invertebrates alone and is reef-safe. It is not common in the trade but is popular as a hardy anthias and is handled by Japanese specialist shops.
