7 things to know before welcoming a Kuhli Loach

1Choose a Soft Substrate
Kuhli Loaches use their barbels to sift through the substrate, so sharp gravel can damage them. Fine, soft sand is a better choice, since these loaches also like to burrow into the bottom.
2Provide Plenty of Hiding Spots
Driftwood, plants, and tube-shaped shelters give your Kuhli Loach places to retreat to and feel secure. Without enough hiding spots, they can become stressed and eat less.
3Keep Them in a Group
Kuhli Loaches feel more secure with company. Keeping five or six or more together, rather than a single fish, encourages them to come out of hiding more often and be more active.
4Secure the Tank Lid
Their slender, flexible bodies let them squeeze through surprisingly small gaps, including filter openings. Use a tight-fitting lid to prevent them from escaping the tank.
