Hypancistrus inspector
A Hypancistrus from rapids of the upper Rio Negro and Casiquiare, with large white-to-yellow spots on a dark body and big eyes. Known as L102, it grows beyond 12 cm SL.
The snowball pleco, Hypancistrus inspector (L102), was described in 2002 from the upper Rio Negro in Amazonas, Brazil, and the Casiquiare canal in Venezuela, which links the Negro and the Orinoco. Orinoco specimens in the original type series were later described as H. contradens. FishBase gives 12.6 cm SL. It is collected from rocky rapids, and stomach contents include algae, detritus and seeds. It has large white-to-yellow spots on a dark body, with smaller spots on the head, and its name refers to its large eyes. Mature males carry more odontodes on the pectoral spines and cheeks and often show a reddish tone. The female spawns in a cave and the male guards eggs and fry. It is distinct from the zebra pleco (H. zebra), and congeners hybridise, so do not keep Hypancistrus species together. It is a standard pleco in Japanese specialist shops.

Omnivore (sinking prepared foods, frozen foods, vegetables)
22-30°C, pH 5.0-7.5, 1-15 dGH (Seriously Fish). A rapids fish that needs high oxygen and clean water; weekly changes of 30-50% are recommended.
Recreate a flowing stream with rocks, sand, driftwood and pipes forming plenty of crevices and shade, including tubes that can serve as spawning caves.
Peaceful and suitable for a well-chosen community, but never keep it with other Hypancistrus such as the zebra pleco, as they hybridise.
Omnivorous with a preference for animal foods. Offer sinking prepared foods plus frozen bloodworm, Daphnia and shrimp, and some fruit or boiled potato.
Has been bred in aquaria. The female spawns in a cave and the male guards the brood. Mature males are reddish and look slimmer than females from above.
Similar spotted plecos exist, so confirm the L102 number and scientific name. Its congener the zebra pleco is in CITES Appendix II, but this species is not listed.
Intermediate. This is an intermediate-level species. Some prior experience and knowledge of environmental management are recommended.
The ideal temperature for Snowball pleco is 22〜30℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
