Bluefin Notho

About
Nothobranchius rachovii is a killifish of the floodplains between the lower Pungwe and Zambezi rivers in Mozambique. Males carry a red reticulated pattern over a blue-green ground and the caudal fin turns bright red. FishBase gives a total length of 6.0cm and Seriously Fish a standard length of 55mm. Its habitats are temporary pools and swamps that dry out completely in the dry season; the adults die as the water goes and only the desiccation-resistant eggs remain in the mud. The fry hatch when the rains return some five to six months later and reach maturity at about three weeks. Seriously Fish gives 20-24C, pH 6.0-7.5, 3-10dGH and a 45 x 30cm tank of about 41 litres, and treats it as a fish for a species tank rather than a community. Eggs are laid in the substrate and stored at 21.1-25C for five to seven months before being wetted. Peat is not essential but peat moss is widely used as the spawning medium. Trade stock includes a strain derived from a 1958 Roloff collection, and other lines carry collection codes so that they are not crossed. IUCN status is Least Concern.
