Epiplatys dageti is a killifish of the coastal lowlands of West Africa. FishBase gives a total length of 6.0cm, and it lives in coastal swamps, quiet stretches of brooks and slow-flowing rivers. Males turn red from the throat to the belly, which gives rise to the English name redchin. The body is slender with an upturned mouth, the typical shape of a surface fish, and it ambushes insects that fall onto the water. FishBase records 21-23C, pH 6.0-7.0 and 5-12dH for its habitat. It is not an annual species, so the eggs need no dry storage, and FishBase describes it as easy to maintain. A lid is essential, as surface fish jump readily. IUCN status is Least Concern.
