Boraras merah is a tiny cyprinid of the peat swamp forests of western and southern Borneo. FishBase records a maximum of 2.0cm SL. Seriously Fish gives 20-28C, pH 4.0-6.5, 1-5 dGH and a 45 x 30cm base, assuming strongly acidic, soft water throughout. The specific name merah is Malay and Indonesian for red, and the fish is indeed reddish with a row of round black blotches along the flank. Extremely peaceful but small and timid, it is unsuited to a general community. Other Boraras, along with Microdevario, Sundadanio, Danionella, Trigonostigma, pygmy Corydoras and Otocinclus, make good companions. It is a continuous spawner with no parental care, laying a few eggs each day when in condition. Too little is known of its status for assessment, so the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient. It is not covered by CITES.
