Tetraodon mbu
One of the largest freshwater puffers, from the Congo basin and Lake Tanganyika, yellowish with a fine dark vermiculated pattern. Recorded to 67 cm, it has strong beak-like teeth for crushing shellfish.
Tetraodon mbu, the mbu or giant puffer, is widespread in the Congo basin and Lake Tanganyika, living in large rivers and lakes and also recorded in estuaries (FishBase). At up to 67 cm TL it is among the largest freshwater puffers. It is yellow to yellow-green with a fine dark vermiculated pattern. Like other puffers, it inflates with water or air when threatened. Its fused, beak-like teeth are used to crush molluscs, its main natural food; the teeth grow continuously and must be worn down with hard, shelled foods. It is aggressive, often biting tankmates, and fights its own kind, so it is normally kept alone, though many individuals learn to recognise their owners. It is a different species from the fahaka (T. lineatus). Small juveniles are sold by Japanese specialist shops; consider the adult size before buying.

Carnivore (snails and shellfish, crabs, prawns, earthworms)
24-26°C (FishBase), pH 7.0-8.0, 10-25 dH (Seriously Fish). A freshwater puffer that needs no added salt. Messy feeding calls for strong filtration.
Seriously Fish suggests a 240 x 90 cm footprint; adults exceed 60 cm, so a tank of this scale is needed for life. Use sand with smooth rocks and driftwood, leaving plenty of open space.
Aggressive and able to bite pieces out of other fish; it also fights its own kind, so keep it alone.
Eats molluscs in the wild. Its teeth grow continuously, so offer snails, unshelled mussels and crab legs regularly to wear them down, plus worms and other frozen or live foods.
Not bred in aquaria; sexes cannot be distinguished externally.
Overgrown teeth can stop it feeding. Like other puffers it contains a potent toxin and must never be eaten. Never release it.
Advanced. This is an advanced-level species. It requires specialized equipment and advanced husbandry skills with precise environmental control.
The ideal temperature for Mbu puffer is 24〜26℃. Avoid sudden temperature changes and maintain a stable environment.
