Baryancistrus xanthellus is a loricariid catfish endemic to the Volta Grande of the Rio Xingu above the Belo Monte falls and to the Rio Iriri in Brazil. FishBase records 29.7cm total length and Wikipedia 22.4cm standard length. Juveniles carry a broad pale band along the edges of the dorsal and caudal fins, which shrinks to a small spot at the fin tips in adults; this is a key character separating it from its congeners. Seriously Fish gives 27-32C, noting it will not thrive in cooler water, with pH 6.0-8.0, 3-15dGH and a 120 x 45cm base of about 243 litres. Gut analyses of wild fish show a diet of diatoms and filamentous algae with small amounts of invertebrates such as chironomids and bryozoans. In the tank, let aufwuchs colonise surfaces for natural grazing and supplement with sinking dried foods and vegetables. The IUCN assesses it as Near Threatened.
