Trigonostigma espei lives in heavily vegetated ponds, pools and swamps in Thailand and Cambodia. FishBase records a maximum of 2.5cm SL, pH 6.0-6.5, hardness to 12 dH and 23-28C, and identifies it by the lambchop-shaped black blotch on the caudal peduncle. Seriously Fish gives 3cm SL, 23-28C, pH 5.5-7.5, 1-10 dGH and a 60 x 30cm base. It is easily confused with T. heteromorpha and T. hengeli, but T. heteromorpha has a pinkish ground and a broad triangular mark while this species is orange with a narrow, tapering one. It makes no special demands on water chemistry and mixes with characins, livebearers, dwarf cichlids, catfishes and loaches. Unlike most small cyprinids it does not scatter its eggs but attaches them to the undersides of broad leaves. The IUCN rates it Least Concern.
